Get Your Hebrew On

Happy Rosh Hashanah all my Jewish friends! As you may or may not know, Rosh Hashanah is Hebrew for “beginning of the year.” It's the Jewish New Year, celebrated on the first and second days of the Jewish month of Tishri (falling in September or October). It begins the observance of the Ten Penitential Days, a period ending with Yom Kippur that is the most solemn of the Jewish calendar. In the Bible, Rosh Hashanah is mentioned as a day of remembrance and of the sounding of the ram's horn. I wonder if there is a correlation with the stock market dropping, and the $700 million bill not passing...

Shaun White For Target

If you've been to Target lately, you may have been been pleasantly surprised in the men's department. You may have seen Shaun's hilarious commercials but you, like me, may have just dismissed him as a designer. But when I was at Target I was delighted with Shaun White Apparel. If you really think about what a real, down to earth guy wants to wear, Shawn's really nailed it. Funny graphics, hoddies, cool western shirts, and straight leg pants. All at reasonable prices (under $30ish) and a boys line too!

Howard Runway Update #3

On Friday all of us girls in the first pass met up at Betsey Johnson for our fitting. It was sooo much fun! Trying on all the mini party dresses, it was every little girls dream. This is a really exciting event, because Ms. Betsey Johnson has never lent her clothes out for a school runway show, so it is a true honor! The above is not the dress I will be wearing, but it is close ;) It's going to be a really fun pass with fluffy strapless minis, and stripper heels. The contradiction is cute and sexy hopefully true to fashion icon herself.

Hot New Movies

Tons of really good movies came out over the weekend, and more to come!

(note: Obviously I'm only talking about the ones I think will be good :) Out over the weekend, the western, Appaloosa which was directed by, and co-stars Ed Harris. Also starring my favorite, the diverse and wildly talented, Viggo Mortensen. Also out over the weekend was the much anticipated action thriller Eagle Eye starring every one's favorite Shia LeBeouf. And of course, in my favorite movie genre, The Dutchess starring the amazing, Kiera Knightly. The suspense drama, Miracle at St Anna directed by the amazing Spike Lee is going to be a must see. And the movie I most want to see, Choke, from the creators of Fight Club.

Coming out this week, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist about young love starring the hilarious Michael Cera (Juno, and Superbad). Blindness starring Julianne Moore, the only person left with sight after a town goes blind. Religulous starring Blill Maher a comedy/documentary/religious/ political film should be really funny and insightful. So grab some popcorn and saddle up for all these great new movies!

Clip Of The Day

Watch NY Times Photographer Bill Cunningham's slide show and commentary of woman in the rain at fashion week here. Interesting insight on how silly fashion can be, but also how beautiful the unintended can be. This is fantastic because I was just shooting people this weekend in the rain. Stay tuned for those pics. Until then, check out today's charming clip of the day.

Britney's New Single

Friday Brit's new single, "Womanizer" was premiered by NYC radio station Z100. Check it out here. The single is off Britney's new album Circus, due out December 2nd.. So far the song isn't available for digital download, but rumor has it, it will be available to purchase on Monday.

Celebrity Wedding

Scarlett Johansson, 23, and Ryan Reynolds, 31, have been dating since Spring 2007, and engaged for four months. (Reynolds was engaged to singer Alanis Morissette. They split in February 2007 after four years together. Johansson was previously dating Josh Hartnett-just a little back story). Well the couple has finally tied the knot. The two had a small wedding in Reynolds' native Canada yesterday. What a hot couple!

New Make Up Looks To Try

Two great new looks from MAC to try! "Chock-ful", "Liquer". Sounds like me on the weekend....

CERN Collider Off Until Spring

Damages were caused last Friday to the Large Hadron Collider when an electrical connection between two magnets melted. The damages plus CERN's yearly winter break will push back the collision of atoms until March or April.... Well, looks like we won't be dying from antimatter until next spring. That's nice.

BREAKING NEWS!

Well, this morning is full of surprises. Lindsey Lohan and Samantha Ronson are, and have been, 'dating for a very long time.' Linds finally confirmed it. Who would have guessed. Another shocker, don't fall out of your chair- Clay Aken is gay. He confessed in today's issue of People Magazine. Apparently his baby's momma Jaymes Foster, a record producer, is just a friend. Man I love when I'm on top of such breaking news.....

Quote of The Day

Jeremy Grey: [sigh] Janice, I apologize to you if I don't seem real eager to jump into a forced awkward intimate situation that people like to call dating. I don't like the feeling. You're sitting there, you're wondering do I have food on my face, am I eating, am I talking too much, are they talking enough, am I interested I'm not really interested, should I play like I'm interested but I'm not that interested but I think she might be interested but do I want to be interested but now she's not interested? So all of the sudden I'm getting, I'm starting to get interested... And when am I supposed to kiss her? Do I have to wait for the door cause then it's awkward, it's like well goodnight. Do you do like that ass-out hug? Where you like, you hug each other like this and your ass sticks out cause you're trying not to get too close or do you just go right in and kiss them on the lips or don't kiss them at all? It's very difficult trying to read the situation. And all the while you're just really wondering are we gonna get hopped up enough to make some bad decisions? Perhaps play a little game called "just the tip". Just for a second, just to see how it feels. Or, ouch, ouch you're on my hair.

Good Stuff Eatery Review

This weekend we stopped in at Good Stuff Eatery over in Capitol Hill. Top Chief contestant Spike Mendelsohn opened this burger joint recently, and we had to get in on the toasted marshmallow milk shake (see picture). First off, it was hard as hell to find. We went Saturday night and drove past it twice. The banner outside isn't lit up and hard to see from the street. (Note: just park once you see Hawk N' Dove). But street parking in that neighborhood is free after 6:30, so that's nice. Once we were inside, it looks kind of like a 5 guys. With the grill in plain view, and stand in line and order set up. My group went up to order while I sat patiently on a bar stool. I saw some guy walking around picking up garbage, he had shaggy, messy hair, bushy beard, and a miss matched outfit on. I didn't take a second look thinking it was a homeless guy. A few minutes later I noticed this huge sign talking about the origin of the restaurant with Chief Spike's picture. What do you know the homeless guy was Chief Spike. To bad I didn't see him after we ate. I would have told him a few things. Well after our vibrators went off, we got our orders in plastic baskets, grab samples of the four mayo sauces, and headed upstairs to chow. Once we sat down in the arena of flat screens playing, of all things, CNN, we realized we could barely hear each other. The music was blaring crappy music and the hardwood floors reverberated the sound forcing us to practically scream over our meal. I ordered a cheese burger, and regular fries. In the group we had the rosemary fries and a turkey burger. Let me just say those rosemary fries ruined every one's dinner. There was so much fricking rosemary and thyme on them they nasally raped me. It was fowl. Those aside, my burger was good. Not great, but good. I'd say it's your proverbial grill burger, cool that it was free range beef, but other than than 5 guys is cheaper. And bigger. And just as good. The turkey burger with avocado on wheat bread looked like someone shit it out, and tasted the same. I might have spit my bite out. But on the highlights side, the fries were pretty good. And dipping them in the dipping sauces was fun, and they were all good. It was neat having everyone taste and pick a favorite (I think our groups favorite was mango). But the real crowd pleaser was the reason we initially came-the toasted marshmallow shake. It was sooo good. Thick and creamy, with chunks of soft marshmallow. We decided the only thing better would be to add a chunk of chocolate, a piece of Graham cracker and call it a S'more shake. So in conclusion, Go. See a celebrity, get the fries, try the sauces, and get the milkshake. But save your money and go to 5 guys for a burger.

Ultimate Jell-O Shot Recipe

Oh Yes, It's That Time Again...Friday Night

Ultimate Jell-O Shot:
14 oz vodka
3 oz Jell-O (lime or orange)
5 oz boiling water

Lime and orange Jell-O to taste the best (i.e., most similar to a vodka-based mixed drink), followed by the lemon and cherry flavors. At the highest concentrations of alcohol, the cherry Jell-O began to taste unpleasantly like cough syrup. I do not recommend the Berry Blue or grape flavors of Jell-O.

Looking more for taste than booze content? The perfect go-to recipe / fan favorite is adding peach schnapps. Cut the vodka to 7 oz and add 7 oz peach schnapps. The schnapps mellows things out, adding sweetness and flavor. It’s not overly tart or bitter, and the taste is mild enough to complement most fruit flavors, with the possible exception of lime and grape. Looking for something more exciting, try one of the recipes below!

Margarita Jell-O Shot
3 oz. package lime Jell-O8 oz.
(1 cup) boiling water
4 oz. tequila
4 oz. sweet and sour or Margarita mix
Substitute watermelon Jell-O for lime for a melon margarita.

Strawberry Daiquiri Jell-O Shot
3 oz. package wild strawberry Jell-O
8 oz. (1 cup) Boiling water
6 oz. white rum
1 oz. sweet and sour or Margarita mix

Sex on the Beach Jell-O Shot
3 oz. package orange Jell-O
8 oz. (1 cup) boiling cranberry juice
3 oz. peach schnapps
5 oz. vodka

William Rast Runway Show

Did you see the FIRST EVER William Rast runway show? I'm always captivated by celebrity fashion lines. Especially when the celebrity is as fashionable as Mr Tiberlake. But the line was not at all what I expected from the polished ex-'Nsyncer. Check it out here and see what you think!

Runway Update #2

Wow, one month until the show! Practice almost everyday it seems like we're becoming a little class, or team. People are molding their own signature walks, friendships are being made. It will be interesting to see were we are as friends at the end of this. Right now they are really trying to get the best out of everyone in each pass, pushing people to give it their all. We are just going through the passes now that they are all cast and placing people in their definite order. Putting people that are in the next pass at the front and people who are not at the back. I'm wondering since I'm in a couple back to back scenes if we will be ripping our clothes off back stage in front of the guys. Um, I hope not...Four weeks until the show!! My favorite scene so far is the punk rock one for sure. Rock music, punk attitudes and what I do at the end of the runway will be a show stopper. Stay tuned!

Today's Depressing News

Leham Bro after a 158 year run, filled for bankruptcy, causing 25,000 around the world to loose their jobs. Myrill Lynch sells out to Bank of America. The Dow ended Friday down 10 points. Read more depressing wall street news here. Gas has rose to over $5 in some parts of the country. Overnight, gasoline prices nationwide rose an average of more than 6 cents. That followed another 6-cent jump between Friday and Saturday. Read more here. And Ike, oh my goodness, 30 are dead, and thousands are left homeless and stuck in shelters. Wow, good morning America. This depressing news has inspired me to get involved. Sitting here bitching isn't going to change anything, and true I can't change the world. But maybe I can do a little good here locally. I looked into two great volunteer sites, if you don't know about them check out the links:

If we could all do a little something, maybe we could make a big change.

Runway Update #1

Well, all week we have been auditioning for each of the seven passes. We just got results, drum roll please......I'm in four out of the seven passes. Nice. The only bad part is that scene
1,3,7 practice Tue/Thur and 2,4,6 practice Mon/Wed. That means is I have practice Monday-Thursday. Who would have thought a college runway show would be so time consuming?! But they're not messing around, this is going to be the hottest production in DC this year!

Washington DC's Theatre Production of George Orwell's 1984 at the Altas Theatre

This amazing performance at the gorgeous Altas Theatre was only $10! What a deal for such talented acting! Tightly performed on a simple, yet versatile set. Some scenes are a little harder to take when you're face to face with them, and the option to put the book down isn't there. But it was captivating. With telescreens and thought crime it was as true to the book as one can imagine or hope.

"Richard Avedon (1923–2004), America’s pre-eminent portraitist and fashion photographer, photographed the faces of politics throughout his career. As the country enters the next presidential election season, the Corcoran will bring together Avedon’s political portraits for the first time. Juxtaposing images of elite government, media, and labor officials with counter-cultural activists and ordinary citizens caught up in national debates, this exhibition will explore a five-decade taxonomy of politics and power by one of our best-known artists. Coco Chanel Movie

Shirley McLaine stars in true story of the fabulous life of Ms. Chanel, one of the most revolutionary artists of all time. Tune in to Lifetime for reruns of this fabulous love and fashion story.

Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (b.1883 - d.1971)

She learned to sew at a Catholics monasary were she spent seven years in her youth. She paved the notion that women should be comfortable, and dress for themselves, not their men and she began with hats! She was the inventor of the Chanel suit, a knee length skirt with boxy jacket, the little black dress (which began as a strapless, backless number!) and was premiered at Playboy’s 3rd edition of the magazine. Coco Chanel revolutionized haute couture fashion by replacing the traditional corseted silhouette with the comfort of simple suits and long, lean dresses. We can also thank her for super soft jersey becoming trendy, and being an icon of the flapper revolution. Karl Lagerfeld is, since 1983, the art director of Chanel. But of course Chanel is most world renowned for it’s Chanel No 5 perfume. Ironic that Chanel became synonymous with elegance, wealth, and elitism, as well as the ultimate sign of French high class when the originator came from an orphanage. Cinderella story at it’s finest. Nice.

End Of The World On My B-Day?

So, couldn't they have picked another day for the world to get swallowed by a black hole? I realize these assholes think that $10 billion dollar piece of shit, the Large Hadron Collider will help understand the origins and evolution of the universe. But it would be nice if they wouldn't big bang up my birthday. I've got some parting to do and I can't do that if I'm being deteriorated by antimatter. MSNBC says it's "designed to probe mysteries ranging from dark matter and missing antimatter to the existence of extra, unseen dimensions in space." Well, I guess we have until October 21st until the first high-energy collisions are planned.....That's nice. I say spend the $10 bills on starving people. But hey, let's create a black hole instead.

My First Modeling Gig!!

MY RUNWAY IDOL @ THE LA FASHION WEEK DEBUT OF THE PUSSYCAT DOLL LINGERIE LINE

"Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J and Ludacris have all rapped about the week of partying that surrounds Howard University's annual homecoming celebration. Diddy, Jay-Z and Kanye West have performed at the university's free outdoor Yardfest concerts. Venus and Serena Williams took a turn on the catwalk during the annual fashion show a few years ago. Add up all those factors and you have one of the key social events on Washington's calendar -- a cross between the NBA All-Star Game, Urban Beach Week and Mardi Gras." - The Washington Post

Out of 457 people little old me got selected to be in this year's homecoming runway show!!! Howard is a historically black college, and I am the only white girl in the show. Perhaps the first white girl ever to be honored to grace the Howard Univ. stage. So not only will this be my modeling debut, it may be a first for Howard! So if you're going to be in the DC area October 16, come check out the most epic runway show DC has ever seen! Howard doesn't do your proverbial, run of the mill BS college runway shows either. If you want to see a sample of what Howard University can do to a fashion show check the link above. We have practice Mon-Thur 7-9pm until the show, that should tell you how crazy good it's going to be, so stay posted!
